african american dating service
Is my friend rude or racists?

She is looking for love and has been going on dates set up by a dating service. A few days ago, she told me she went out with a guy but he was too DARK. He was Middle Eastern. She is Asian-Chinese and has said that she doesn’t want to date an Asian, but is looking for a white man or Mexican. I am getting the impression that she is a little racists. I am her friend, and I am African American and her remarks stunn me.

It’s less a question of “is she racist?” and more one of “what is racism?”.

Does sexual attraction play a part in racism? On the one hand IS discriminating because of race, but does sexual preference matter?

African American Acculturation African American Acculturation
$57.98

Should African American be construed as a race or as an ethnic group? If African Americans are defined as an ethnic group, what role does culture play in their lives and how can we measure their culture? This groundbreaking volume argues that we reject the concept of race and define African Americans as a cultural group. It presents the first scale ever devised for measuring acculturation among African Americans, along with powerful studies that empirically explore the role of culture and acculturation in African American behavior, health, and psychology. Among the authors' findings are how acculturation predicts symptoms--such as depression and anxiety--and physical problems such as hypertension. Public and mental health researchers and professionals will find this book an intriguing and useful presentation of an emerging approach to psychological and health theory and practice. "I found this volume to be compelling and informative. I believe that this book will stimulate a great advance in the way we conceptualize African American psychology in particular and psychology in general. The authors do an outstanding job of integrating perspectives from multiple disciplines into a psychological perspective and then in applying that perspective to their empirical work. . . . This is a wonderful book and is of great service to the field." --Hardin L. K. Coleman, Ph.D., Department of Counseling Psychology, University of Wisconsin

Landmarks of African American History Landmarks of African American History
$32.95

In Landmarks of African American History, James Oliver Horton chooses thirteen historic sites to explore the struggles and triumphs of African Americans and how they helped shape the rich and varied history of the United States. Horton begins with the first Africans brought to Jamestown, Virginia, and the start of slavery in the colonies that became the United States. Boston's Old State House provides the backdrop to the martyrdom of Crispus Attucks, the former slave killed in the Boston Massacre, the confrontation with British troops that led to the American Revolution. After theCivil War, former slaves settled the desolate area of Nicodemus, Kansas, and turned it into a thriving community. The USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Boston's Old State House illustrate African American contributions to the defense of their country and reveal racial tensions withinthe military. And the black students who demanded service at Woolworth's racially segregated lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, launched the sit-in movement and advanced the fight for civil rights. Horton brings together a wide variety of African American historical sites to tell of theglory and hardship, of the great achievement and determination, of the people and events that have shaped the values, ideals, and dreams of our nation.

The African American Experience in Vietnam The African American Experience in Vietnam
$23.98

In this book James Westheider explores the social and professional paradoxes facing African-American soldiers in Vietnam. Service in the military started as a demonstration of the merits of integration as blacks competed with whites on a near equal basis for the first time. Yet as the war in Vietnam progressed, many black recruits felt isolated and threatened in an institution controlled almost totally by whites. Consequently, many blacks no longer viewed the military as a professional opportunity, but an undue burden on the black community.0402; 0404; 0406; 0438; 0468; A0S0; A0S4; 2858; HIS027070

T. McCants Stewart was a prominent African-American in his day, a lawyer during the Reconstruction who later became a minister, politician, and racial activist and was regarded by his peers as one of the most significant black leaders of his generation. This book illuminates the professional career and private lives of Stewart and his descendants over three generations, providing an epic account of an African-American family in America. Albert Broussard researched Stewart family papers and interviewed nearly every surviving family member to tell their unusual story. He not only presents the first major study of T. McCants Stewart's civil rights and political career; he also tells how Stewart's descendants rejected white society's negative image of blacks and worked to improve themselves and uplift their race: Stewart's son Gilchrist became a successful civil rights leader and attorney and his daughter Carlotta an educator, while granddaughter Katherine directed a Head Start program and her husband Robert Flippin was the first black parole officer at San Quentin prison. The saga of the Stewarts begins in antebellum Charleston but moves on to New York, Africa, Hawaii, and numerous other locales to relate how this family fulfilled a mission to provide leadership and service to its community. Exploring issues of class, intergenerational relations, and community activism, it provides a wealth of material on the black community that spans two centuries. A particular value of Broussards' work is his account of how Stewart women coped with an overbearing patriarch and forged meaningful careers in an era when black females usually held menial jobs. By sharing experiences of both genders, he offers insights into the different strategies that black men and women used to meet their personal goals and collective obligations. Intelligent, ambitious, and entrepreneurial, the Stewarts have much to tell us about what it was to be African-American over the last hundred years. By linking their history to the changing status of African-Americans at home and abroad, this book weaves the contributions of an extraordinary family into the larger drama of American race relations.
